In a groundbreaking move to improve the management and conservation of water resources, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Thursday launched two advanced digital platforms:
Tamil Nadu Water Resources Information and Management System (TNWRIMS)
Tamil Nadu Satellite-based Water Bodies Information Monitoring and Safety System (TN-SWIP)
These cutting-edge portals are set to digitally transform water governance by integrating geo-intelligence, real-time data, and predictive analytics into one accessible and user-friendly platform.
What is TNWRIMS?
Developed at a cost of ₹30 crore with technical support from NABARD Consultancy Services and VASSAR Labs, TNWRIMS is the first-of-its-kind system in India that enables real-time forecasting of water flow across all river basins in the state. It also allows:
Assessment of sector-wise water demand
Live monitoring of reservoirs, canals, irrigation tanks, and groundwater
Improved decision-making for water resource allocation and conservation
The TNWRIMS portal integrates data from a wide array of agencies including:
Central Water Commission (CWC)
Indian Meteorological Department (IMD)
Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)
Various national and international sources
Users can access the portal at: tnwrims.tn.gov.in
“This portal is a single, reliable source of data for all stakeholders — from farmers and engineers to researchers and policymakers,” said an official release from the Chief Minister’s office.
What is TN-SWIP?
Launched alongside TNWRIMS, the Tamil Nadu Satellite-based Water Bodies Information Monitoring and Safety System (TN-SWIP) is a geoportal and mobile application developed at a cost of ₹3.55 crore. Its key features include:
Real-time monitoring of water levels and water quality
Detection of encroachments around water bodies
Mobile-friendly interface for easy field reporting
TN-SWIP is currently being implemented on a pilot basis in four key districts:
Tiruvallur
Kancheepuram
Chengalpattu
Chennai
If successful, it is expected to be rolled out across the entire state.
A Step Towards Digital Water Governance
Both portals were launched as part of Tamil Nadu's broader initiative to digitize and decentralize water management, ensuring efficiency, accountability, and sustainability. The goal is to create a climate-resilient water strategy powered by accurate, real-time data.
This initiative aligns with Tamil Nadu’s commitment to sustainable development, especially in light of rising climate challenges, water scarcity, and rapid urbanization.
Strengthening the Water Resources Workforce
Before launching the portals, Chief Minister Stalin also handed over appointment orders to 169 newly selected Assistant Engineers (Civil) in the Water Resources Department. These appointments, made through the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC), are aimed at strengthening the on-ground implementation of water management projects across the state.
Why It Matters
With Tamil Nadu often facing seasonal water shortages and increasing groundwater stress, this move sets a new benchmark in data-driven water management in India. The integrated platforms will:
Empower administrators and engineers
Support smart farming and irrigation
Enable better disaster preparedness
Ensure transparency and reduce encroachments
