Kerala Police have filed an FIR against Congress MLA Rahul Mamkootathil of Palakkad, who was suspended from the party on August 25 following allegations of misconduct towards women. Rahul had also resigned as the Kerala Youth Congress president last week after accusations surfaced from TV journalist-turned-actor Rini Ann George, who claimed that a “young politician” sent her obscene messages and invited her to a hotel room.

While no formal complaints have yet been filed by the alleged victims, the FIR was registered based on complaints received by the state police chief. The case falls under Section 78(2) of the BNS, relating to stalking, and Section 120(0) of the Kerala Police Act, which addresses repeated harassment through any form of communication.

An official statement from Kerala Police noted, “The complaints were reviewed and categorized as a cognizable offence. The FIR was registered under the direction of State Police Chief Ravada Chandrasekhar. The Crime Branch, led by Deputy SP P C Binu Kumar, will investigate the matter.”

The FIR alleges that the stalking involved harassing women through social media, causing mental distress, and sending messages that pressured victims to undergo abortion.

Earlier, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan assured that necessary legal action would be taken and emphasized that complainants will receive protection and need not hesitate to report such incidents.

Rahul Mamkootathil’s resignation as Youth Congress president followed multiple voice clips, reportedly attributed to him, in which he allegedly threatened a woman to undergo abortion. Amid public outcry, a section of political leaders demanded his resignation from the legislative assembly. However, the Congress party suspended him from primary membership, citing concerns about similar cases in opposition parties for consistency.

Following the suspension, Rahul will no longer be considered a member of the Congress parliamentary party in the Kerala Assembly.
